How You'll Make a Difference:

Provides work direction, guidance and feedback to advanced practice clinicians to ensure high quality and efficient patient care. Provides diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive health care services and complex care coordination for neonatal and high-risk infant patients with complex, acute, critical and chronic health conditions. Responsible for the patient evaluation, interpretation, diagnosis, and prescribing of appropriate medical and therapeutic measures. Works autonomously as well as in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, therapists and social workers to diagnose and manage patient care. Requires at least 50% of time dedicated to clinical practice and a minimum of 10% (8 hours per pay period) dedicated to Lead duties, with flexibility to alter based on practice needs.

Acts as a mentor and expert resource to advanced practice clinicians (APCs), which includes training, orienting, on-boarding, providing clinical work direction, and ensuring effective, efficient workflow and staffing coverage. Participates in recruitment, interviewing and hiring of employees, staff development, resolution of employee concerns, and employee morale. Participates in or conducts annual merit-based evaluation process. Provides clinical and professional performance feedback to each APC for the practice. Obtains additional feedback regarding clinical and professional performance from other colleagues, including but not limited to, physicians, APCs, RNs, MAs, other support staff.

Develops and maintains orientation plans, work improvement plans if necessary, clinical competencies, various communication tools, practice protocols and scope of practice documents. Develops and monitors a quality improvement plan with physicians. Collaborates with professional and ancillary staff to ensure the provision of high quality and efficient patient care.

Acts as liaison for communication between ancillary departments and actively participates in meetings/updates with Coding and Billing, Compliance, Pharmacy, other specialties as related to APC practice. Assists in program development by participation in practice goal setting, new program/service development/deployment, resource allocation, and community outreach in collaboration with physicians and operational leaders. Coordinates education for APCs related to specialty practice changes and updates. Supports excellence in patient care through sharing timely, up-to-date, evidence based research.

Manages the daily care of neonates and high-risk infants which includes the provision of advanced practice clinical skills such as delivery room management of the infant, advanced physical assessment, evaluation of laboratory and clinical data, consulting and collaborating with physicians and other interdisciplinary team members. Attends high-risk and c-section deliveries as team leader except when neonatologist is present.

Acts as the primary patient and physician contact. Works one-on-one with the physician to facilitate access to the specialty team for the patient and their family. Provides for continuity of care by ensuring smooth transitions between care settings and tracks patient along the care continuum including post-discharge.

Provides complex care coordination, which includes managing a variety of ancillary services, pre-operative plans, discharge planning, and clinician referrals. Provides clinical direction to nursing staff regarding the continued care of patients. Follows through with nursing staff to ensure patient receives recommended care. Develops staffing schedule to ensure coverage needs are met for areas of responsibility.

Prescribes, recommends and regulates pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies, including controlled medications that are warranted by patient's diagnosis or changing medical condition. Orders, performs, and interprets procedures, diagnostic tests or studies to manage complex neonatal illnessess/conditions, most commonly, prematurity and respiratory distress. Examples could include: injections, immunizations, wound care, spinal taps, intubation, umbilical line insertion, lumbar punctures, and chest tube, percutaneous arterial line and central line insertion.

Provides parental and family support and education as it relates to the infant. Counsels, instructs and educates families on physical and mental health including: disease, home care skills, treatment options, health behaviors, diet, preventive health measures, and growth and development.

Interprets and evaluates patient data as authorized by a physician for the purpose of determining management and treatment of patients. Consults with physician as appropriate. Adjusts patient care plan by reviewing and monitoring treatments and therapy plans. Prepares, dictates and signs patient care plans and summaries of patient care. Maintains records according to established standards and guidelines. Presents educational programs and conferences. Acts as en educational resource for staff and the community. Provides community outreach services, by facilitating patient, family and community health promotion. Develops and oversees outreach programs with other facilities.

Manages the neonatal resuscitation team when neonatologist is not present. Acts as the team leader during transport to/from facilities, and in collaboration with the neonatologist, provides stabilization of critically ill infants. Performs various patient positioning and transporting duties, which require lifting and pushing/pulling, while utilizing proper technique. Works with leadership in the development, implementation, management and evaluation of neonatal programs, policies and procedures, and clinical guidelines. Analyzes program standards and needs; may assume coordination responsibility for a program(s).

What it Will Take:

Licenses & Certifications

Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which the team member practices, and

Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber license issued by the state of Wisconsin, and

Neonatal Nurse Practitioner-Board Certified (NNP-BC) issued by the National Certification Corporation (NCC), and

Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration issued by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Registration, and

Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required.

Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA)/American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

Degrees

Master's Degree in Nursing.

Required Functional Experience

Typically requires 5 years of experience in providing clinical care as a neonatal nurse practitioner that includes extensive knowledge of neonatal/infant physiology, pathophysiology, and pharmacology.

Ability to effectively exercise independent judgment in the assessment, diagnosis and initiation of nursing and delegated medical processes and procedures.Demonstrated ability to work independently and as an effective member of a health care team.Ability to work in a fast paced, high stress environment while managing multiple demands.Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to effectively collaborate with and establish/build relationships with others.Proven organizational skills and ability to prioritize effectively.Excellent decision making and leadership skills to resolve complex patient care and administrative issues.

Scheduled Hours:

NNP Lead- schedule will cover minimally one 24 hour shift per week along with administrative responsibilities. Weekends and holiday coverage per rotation.
